One of the most popular game shows in television history has a unique twist to its format. Jeopardy has been around for almost six decades. I enjoy occasionally playing along because apparently, I need to be reminded that there is a large population of people out there who are much smarter than I will ever be. Watching an episode of Jeopardy is a sobering exercise in humility.

One of the distinctive traits in the format of the game show is the requirement that the answer must be in the form of a question. The official rules put it this way:

“…all contestant responses to an answer must be phrased in the form of a question.”

That’s a complete reversal of how we normally operate. Our brains are trained to first recognize a question, then give the answer to the question being posed.

In Jeopardy, the question is the answer.

This Sunday is a very important day in the life of our church. It is Confirmation Sunday, a day in which our Confirmation class members make a public Profession of Faith in Jesus Christ and are received into full membership.

Each member of the Confirmation class has been involved in a months long journey of study, learning and preparation for this special day. You’ve been a big part of their journey at Trinity. We helped raise them, nurtured them in the faith, taught them, led them, showed them the way, and loved them along the way. The most important thing we could do is to help them know who Jesus is and why He’s so important in their lives.

“Who do you say that I am?”

It’s one of the most important questions we’ll ever be asked.

Get the answer right and it will open a whole new world for you.

In Matthew’s gospel, Jesus is the One asking the question.

He’s also the answer.
