Grow Up to be a Child Part 3 “Childlike Courage Facing Our Giants” Traditional Service Livestream

David and Goliath
It’s a favorite children’s story from the Bible. Even if you’re not religious, chances are you’ve heard it. It’s a story that transcends time and cultures. We still use it to describe the unthinkable. Defying the odds. Overcoming tremendous challenges. Little school defeats big University. Small group of people holds out against overwhelming forces. Little guy takes down big corporation.
At the center of the story is a little boy who stands up to a giant. To make the point, we are reminded that Goliath is the mightiest Philistine warrior who stands at 9 feet 9 inches. Against all odds David defeats the mighty Goliath.
Of course, the giants we encounter don’t always look like Goliath, but they are equally intimidating and scary. The giants in our lives look more like, loneliness, fear, a sudden illness, divorce, the loss of a loved one, an unexpected crisis. The message is about overcoming our fears and facing and defeating the giants that threaten our lives.
David and Goliath answer the question, “What does real courage look like?”
David defeats Goliath with God’s help and five smooth stones.
Five smooth stones. Let that sink in.
We’ll look at this well-known story and search for ways we can face our own giants with God’s help. The five smooth stones are a clue.
I’ll give you a hint: The biggest battle we face is not the giant that stands before us. The biggest battle is overcoming our fear, having the courage to fight, and trusting God will see us through.
