The Advent journey begins in silence. 400 years of silence between the Old Testament and the New Testament. Between the Prophet Malachi and John the Baptist. It’s a time of silence, a period of waiting and preparation for God to act. Historically the church marks time not with a calendar but with candles. This Sunday marks the beginning of the season of Advent. So this Sunday, we will light a candle to remind us that God is coming to us in the most marvelous and unexpected way. We light a candle not so much to remember the past but to light the way forward as we raise our eyes to see what God is doing in the midst of our lives. Wait, watch, listen.
